Phoebe

Phoebe was a young Saluki who left us too soon. She was an ex-gypsy dog. Something very bad had happened to her and she was never a “normal” dog. She was scared of everything. I sent her off to Saluki Welfare but she bounced from her homes. So she came back to me. She was happy and relaxed only at Kim’s Home. She loved running free and I couldn’t deny her that.

Then one awful day in September 2003, she disappeared. It was some weeks before I found out what had happened to her. She must have coursed a fox who took her a long way from our walking area. She was last seen running up the central reservation of the motorway in the dark about 10 minutes after she went missing. Phoebe was a dog who would have run until she was stopped. So she must have died. I have never found her body – which still haunts me.
